Readers are Leaders – PHE America

I am not sure where I first heard the phrase “readers are leaders” but it is something that has stuck with me throughout my entire life. I am now in my second year of retirement from teaching and coaching after 37 years of doing both. As I have thought about what to do in my retirement, one thing that keeps coming back into my mind is the need to read some great books. I have always believed that reading can help you become the best version of yourself for others. When you are busy with coaching and teaching, like I…

In health care, it’s profit not privatization to fear

In story after story, the crisis in health care and the shortage of health-care workers begs for more money and action. The future of health care in this country does not turn, as premiers would have us believe, on a fight for federal dollars. The emerging drama is a fight for profits in the sector and investors are already quietly winning. Although there is hope that the new federal funding table last week will improve access to critically needed hospital, primary, long-term and home care, it raises new concerns. Premier Doug Ford told reporters the prime minister imposed no restrictions…

Today’s letters: Transgender people need fair access to health care

Article content Ontario must act on transgender healthArticle content Transgender individuals are not receiving adequate health care in Ontario. While most have many of the same health needs as the rest of the public, some require unique forms of care that they are unable to access. A holistic approach must be adopted to reduce the overwhelming inequity and discrimination of community faces. This sort of approach considers the intersectionality of social identities and how these identities create barriers to health care. Stigma based on gender identity may be exacerbated by factors such as race, age, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic…

(Article 4 of 5)People with physical disabilities hold limited positions as scholars, teachers, or leaders in physical education, recreation, and sports. Opposition leaders slam government’s purchase of hotels to create health-care facilities

Nova Scotia’s opposition leaders say the provincial government failed to do its due diligence before spending $34 million in a sole-sourced deal for an incomplete hotel it plans to convert into a site for some hospital patients. “The whole thing stinks, frankly,” said NDP Leader Claudia Chender. “Why on earth would the government let tens of millions of dollars go out the door without a procurement process, without any oversight for a building that experts say is unfit for the purpose — I think people should be concerned.” Last month, the province completed the purchase of 21 Hogan Court in…

Canada-led study suggests changing the tune of medical alarms

A new Canadian-led study into the effectiveness of medical alarms has revealed musical notes are “less bothersome” than industry-standard flat tones, which researchers believe could better alert health-care workers without compromising patient safety. Researchers changed the sounds in medical devices to see if they were more effective in alerting users. Then, in a separate experiment, respondents rated how annoying they found each of the tones that were tested, preferring percussive tones to flat tones. Findings of the study, conducted in Hamilton, Ont., and published in the British Journal of Anesthesia, offer a glimmer of hope for some health-care workers, who…
