LDL drugs may be an alternative to statins

Statin drugs are the gold standard when it comes to reducing LDL, or ‘bad’ cholesterol, but many patients at risk for heart disease refuse to take them because of severe side effects, such as muscle pain or weakness. An alternative medication, bempedoic acid, significantly lowers cholesterol and the risk of heart attacks, as well as reducing the need for a procedure that unblocks clogged arteries, according to a large clinical trial presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology. The research was published Saturday in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Statins are the cornerstone of…

Leaked Audio From a Ron DeSantis Donor Event Is Really Bad News for His Campaign

Photo Illustration by Luis G. Rendon/The Daily Beast/ReutersWhen Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gathered top allies with deep pockets last week in Miami for a three-day “Ron-o-Rama” retreat, his team made the case for a path to victory. But there’s a major problem with the Team DeSantis logic: Its case for DeSantis’ path to victory actually worked better for his chief rival, former President Donald Trump. The rationale hinges on myriad assumptions, and even those who are shaky. Some Alberta doctors have anti-Indigenous biases: Survey

The Metis Nation of Alberta says many of its members have experienced racism when accessing Alberta’s health-care system. “Rather than risk being discriminated against or feeling less than… They’re choosing not to go,” said Reagan Bartel, director of health for the Metis Nation of Alberta. “Our community feels that very deeply, that physicians are above and Metis people are below, and that’s not a good place to be when you’re seeking help.” A survey of Alberta doctors backs up some of those concerns. Researchers at the University of Calgary sent the survey to every licensed doctor in the province in…
